Dutch Beef Stew Easy Recipe
HACHEE – A Dutch classic delicious, and satisfying warming beef stew.
About Hachee:
Hachee is a traditional Dutch stew based on fish or poultry, diced meat, and vegetables. The Hachee based on beef, apple butter, onions, breakfast bread and vinegar or wine, is a typical recipe of the traditional Dutch cuisine. Generally, a classic hachee beef stew is made with only a few ingredients. Seasoned with dark beer, bay leaves and cloves.
SERVES: 4
Ingredients:
- 50g of butter
- 600g of beef (suitable for stewing), cubed
- 2 tablespoons of flour
- 1 beef stock cube
- 3 large chopped onions
- 3 tablespoons of red wine vinegar
- 4 cloves
- 3 bay leaves
- Salt and pepper
Instructions:
- Melt the butter in a thick-walled cooking pot, like a Dutch oven.
- Add the beef and brown well.
- Take out the beef and set it aside.
- Add the onions to the remaining fat and cook until it’s translucent and slightly browned.
- Add the beef back in and mix with the onions.
- Sprinkle over the flour, then cook 1 or 2 minutes on low heat and keep stirring regularly.
- Add the warm water until the beef is barely covered.
- Add the stock cube, the red wine vinegar, the bay leaves and cloves.
- Cover and simmer on a low heat for at least 3 hours. If you prefer a thick sauce you have to take of the lid for the last 30 minutes to evaporate some of the moisture of the sauce.
- Taste it and adjust seasoning as you like with salt and pepper, if necessary.
- Serve with potato puree or rice.
